SMACK/URL Responds To Loaded Lux’s Complaints About “Summer Madness 3”

Exclusive: The Ultimate Rap League responds to Loaded Lux’s “Bout My Money” diss track and explains why the theme of “Summer Madness 3” is “bars over names.

When the Ultimate Rap League (URL) released the line-up for “Summer Madness 3,” some fans were surprised that the much-discussed face-off between Hollow Da Don andLoaded Lux was not scheduled. Other notable URL battlers, such as DNACharlie Clips and Tsu Surf, were also not included in the line-up.

URL host and co-founder SMACK made a video blog discussing the September 8 event and a new theme, “bars over names,” explaining why some prominent figures in Battle Rap were not slated to appear at the annual card.

“It’s not about the big names no more,” SMACK says in the video. “Because a lot of the big names that actually perform on the stage ain’t delivering the quality battles and the quality performances that we’re looking for.”

URL co-founder Beasley echoed SMACK’s video comments in an exclusive statement to HipHopDX. “We want to show fans and emcees that just because one guy’s profile isn’t that big, that it doesn’t mean that he can’t compete with another emcee who has a name or profile that is larger,” Beasley says. “We want to see hunger and aggression, that drive that has gotten the culture to level that it is today. [At ‘Summer Madness 3’], you can expect hunger, bars and great battles.”

Loaded Lux, who had one of the league’s most acclaimed showings at last year’s event, addressed his not appearing at “Summer Madness 3” in his new song, “Bout My Money.”

“Some have asked ’bout ‘Summer Madness,'” Lux says on the song. “I tell them, ‘These questions you come at SMACK with’ / Smack him and ask him why in the fuck would he double backwards?”

The song can be heard below.

URL’s Beasley Responds To Loaded Lux’s “Bout My Money”
URL responded to the song with a statement to HipHopDX yesterday (August 27), explaining their stance on the track.

“We thought it was dope and creative,” Beasley said regarding the Loaded Lux song. “I think SMACK’s blog is the equivalent to the effect of Kendrick Lamar’s verse on ‘Control.’ We got guys showing up to battles prepared now, emcees making diss tracks and blogs. Lux is a super talent, but he is asking for a tremendous amount of money to battle that just isn’t available in the culture at the present time. I can’t put a price on his talent, but as business I have to do what’s economically sound for URL and a battle between him and Hollow Da Don is more then we are willing and able to pay at the present time.

“Lux is smart and he’s getting the fans pumped up,” Beasley continued. “In a lot of ways we are viewed like a record label and he is playing the role of the disgruntled artist. The fans are looking at us like, ‘Just pay him,’ and we’re like, ‘From where?’ All jokes aside, we have a plan in place to make this happen and Lux and Hollow want it to happen on URL as well, so stay tuned to URL’s rebuttal to Lux’s track. I promise you. It’s going to shake the game up.”

Whether or not URL’s plans for a Hollow and Lux battle come to fruition, the “Summer Madness 3” card is set to feature several rappers who have been a part of the series since the beginning, Beasley says.

“We have some of the usual suspects from past ‘Summer Madness’ events like T-Rex, Calicoe, John John Da Don and K-Shine, but we also brought in a lot of new faces, leaving some of the top tier emcees without a slot to participate,” Beasley said. “SMACK made a blog talking about how some of the top-tier emcees aren’t showing up and how he wants to see more hunger. The blog set off a firestorm of Twitter rants, blogs, Facebook discussions and eventually led to the Loaded Lux diss record. [Other] emcees have threatened to not attend. Others have made slick remarks on Twitter. This is so selfish and self-centered to me. Why can’t you be happy for other emcees [who are] your friends, who finally have their shot to shine on the biggest event in Battle Rap? These are the same guys who supported you when you appeared on Summer Madness events in the past. I think when these guys begin to become allies outside of competition on stage, the culture will flourish.”

Nonetheless, Beasley also said that he wouldn’t rule out a surprise match-up announced before the event. “You’ll have to show up and see,” he said.

BULLSHIT! Dont you sit there and say it aint economically sound when you would make a GRIP if you knew how to SPEND MONEY! You have to SPEND money to MAKE money! White folks do it everyday! TFOH! Just say at the present time, we aren’t SEASONED enough to know HOW to make that money! You have the dopest MC and youo are letting him get away! DUMB DUMB DUMB! You are SETTLING for this card, simple and plain! You niggas created these divas and now you will suffer the consequences of those actions. YOU let Hitman get out of control, YOU let Verb get out of control! Now you’re left with scraps right now! Ain’t nobody buying this bullshit reasoning! You niggas need to learn BUSINESS 101.

    • fuck lux stp bitchn strt rymng

      is this lux lol stfu!!!!!!

      • rexchap

No, just a person who understands BUSINESS!! These cats are rookies and they letting a GOLDEN opportunity slip! This has MANY MILLONS of DOLLARS written all over it and they are bitchin about 40g’s and weak performances that they are partly to BLAME for!

        • http://RUOfficial.com/ Jamale J Jones

Both of you are stupid. Lux is an over-exaggerated talent and logical minds (even with you illiterate trolls every fucking where) realizes that. I don’t give a shit who is tweeting or mentioning Lux, at the end of the day, his talent or spot is not solidified based off a lackluster and non-consistent performance. What will happen IF this battle occurs… it will never equal the hype you are have created, so in a sense, you have damaged a man’s career before it even blossoms with all these smoke and mirror debates being generated. This battle (if ever happens) may very well give the opposite (negative) impact to URL. Fucking street troll niggas, I swear I hate ‘fans’ sometimes.

      • North

        He’s actually right, don’t be a moron and read/comprehend.

    • dziaah

I agree. LUX IS A PROBLEM AT THIS BATTLE RAP SHIT! JUST RAW TALENT!. This dude was part of the first movement on camera battle rapping and still respected by the masses. But Heres what im sick of. Im sick of dumb ignorant ass niggas that THINK they know the URL budget. They runnin a bizz! All the money they get gets invested into cameras, venues, and all kinds a shit to upgrade the production itself. Not to mention paying the staff and other artists. And yeah smack dun fucked up now lux gave em the most views… how you expect a top tier battle rapper not to want top tier dollas!!!!!! that nigga a beast and he wanna be paid for his WORK cuz you gone get it lol. Im ridin wit Lux on dis 1. Smack need to stop playin games. Lionz Den Wadup

  • Macmar415

I like how people all of a sudden want to tell the URL staff how to run a business and want to be all in URL’s finances. Not that URL should have to explain finances to the general audience / fans, but I’ll save them the time.

Smack said on his blog the venue can “legally” hold roughly 1200 individuals, but he wasn’t trying to even pack it because he wanted people to be able to attend SM3 comfortably so keep that in mind as I get to my next point.

    Example:

    Let’s say URL sells 900 tickets / seats at $100 a pop.
    Total = $90,000

Let’s say URL sells 200 Early Bird tickets / seats at $200 a pop
    Total = $40,000
Total from ticket sales = $130,000
    Now…..
Let’s say Lux wants $40,000 for his performance.
    URL now has $90,000
There are now 12 other mc’s who need to get paid, right?
Let’s say URL pays each of the performing mc’s $3,000
    Total = $36,000
    URL now has $54,000
    Now…
Venue cost to include: Security, Staffing, Catering & things of that nature
    $???
Video recording / editing, Audio, Advertising
    $???
URL Staff Smack, Beasley so forth & so on
    $???
Not sure if this event has a permit(s) requirement, but if so
    $???
Basically what I’m getting at is it’s not a debate on if Lux is worth it or not, it’s more about how can any business afford to pay 1 artist roughly 1/3 of their total ticket sales and still afford to stay in business? Financially it’s not going to happen and that’s the bottom line. I think too many individuals are thinking that the URL staff is saying he isn’t worth what he’s asking for instead of realizing currently the URL isn’t in a position where they can afford to pay him what he wants. It’s no hard feelings, it’s just the URL hasn’t progressed to Madison Square Gardens people. Everyone thinks it’s so easy to say sure, let’s pay whatever people ask for and that’s not business that’s stupid.
I wouldn’t tell Lux to sell himself short for anyone, but at the same time if someone if offering you a chance to showcase your talent on the biggest event URL has to offer and also is welling to pay you & you have nothing better going on at that time frame, why not take the money, free exposure and possibly grow your fan base bigger than what it already is? It’s a win, win situation UNLESS he has something lined up offering him more than what URL can afford to pay him and I’m sure the URL and anyone else would totally understand that.
In my opinion, and only my opinion; when you mentioned Smack in a song titled “Bout My Money” shows disrespect to not only Smack, but the entire URL staff because it really didn’t need to go there. No one ever disrespected Lux about what he asked for openly, so to respond to either fan questions or Smack with a video talking about how you’re all about that money shows me how you can battle Calicoe and try to son him on grown man shit, but you still the same nigga hustling your own for a dollar. Don’t knock one man cause he made mistakes one way, but you’re hustling for money the same as he, but in a different manner.
If I see Lux at SM3 that shows me I was right. He didn’t have anything better to do at that time and all he cared about was the money! I hope I’m wrong people, I really do. I can respect Lux for turning down an offer for SM3 if he had something paying him more on the table. That would should me, as a fan, Lux is about business first. BUT, and I do mean BUT, if he doesn’t have ANYTHING BETTER on the table there should be no reason to miss out on the money URL is willing to pay you for your performance, free advertising / exposure on stage, and the chance at increasing his fan base because of a financial ego. In the long run, your fans will be the ones that feed you financially from sales, not your hunger for riches.
Be safe all and I hate on no one, but I do call it how I se it, not how everyone else does. If you agree, you agree. If you don’t, you’re entitled to that also.
    I’m out, 1!

    • rexchap

The PROBLEM is that is that you just explained nigga pennies when they have the HOTTEST thing out and aren’t MAXIMIZING. They don’t have the KNOWLEDGE or the right folks around them to MAKE REAL MONEY! I’m not gonna tell them HOW, cuz REAL BUSINESS PEOPLE pay for consultation! I ain’t gonna tell them how to SUCCEED for free! They seem like decent cats who appear to WANT to SUCCEED without outside help! They are fucking it up!!! Stop looking to clear nigga pennies every event. LOSE SMACK as your mouthpiece! You are getting watered down and weak performances because you are LETTING the talent go ELSEWHERE to get money! If you don’t have signed EXCLUSIVITY CONTRACTS, then you let them go and use decent bars in a D LEAGUE event! When they come back, they don’t have NOTHING left, they have repeat bars or NO 3rd rds! You are guaranteeing money for BULLSHIT…….I’ll stop cuz i already gave free advice!

      • Macmar415

I feel you but it’s battle rap fam and you’re talking exclusive contracts? That means battle rappers should also have a management team to include a budget for them to negotiate those contracts & their fees right? This isn’t that serious. Smack went from dvds to paying these street artists to perform in sold out URL events and now on a nation wide network channel with the UFF on BET, major exposure and the means to actually make a name for themselves that stretched outside of their neighborhood but all that isn’t good enough now?
The only way they’d be able to do something like that is to hold a battle rap concert so to speak, but I don’t see them selling out Madison Square Gardens anytime soon, no offense to the URL. If I’m not mistaken, the URL is the biggest battle league to date, not to mention I believe they also pay the most in terms of performances. I just don’t see how they became the number 1 league for battle rap, have the highest paid, top mc’s of battle rap, & made it to a nation wide network channel like BET if they are doing bad business. The track record of their work ethics proves something totally different than what some of these fans opinions are in regards of how they’ve handled their business.
Are we getting tired of seeing the same names on the cards all the time, yes, I’ll be the first to admit it, but on the flip side I can’t blame the URL for paying mc’s who blatantly state during their battle how they didn’t prepare or even write bars for a performance they got paid for. If I paid for a concert where an artist is suppose to be doing 5 songs and that artist only does 2, am I going to get mad at artist or the company sponsoring the event? At some point these mc’s need to take responsibility for their own actions. The URL can’t write verses for these artist, nor make them prepare for an even both myself and the next person paid for, but soon as an event is labeled trash it’s no longer the artist fault, everyone wants to blame Smack and/or the URL.

      • gwvaio

you stupid Rex! I like that line “I’m not gonna tell them HOW” Sit your dumb ass down. You have never paid for anything SMACK related in your life but now you want to sit back and criticize. As long as you’re not paying for anything the most you can do is shut the hell up. Lux made his decision. If he doesn’t want to battle for less than X amount of money that’s on him. No one is obligated to pay him anything, especially when he’s choking his rounds away. Does SMACK get a 3rd of his money back when niggas forget their bars? Maybe if Lux spent more time memorizing his lines and not on the phone trying to arrange hearses and caskets for the show, maybe then he would have his money.

        • Rexchap

Dude, STFU…REALLY, Now you know how i spend my money? NIGGA PLEASE!!!!!! Keep your dumbass huggin the block, rollin L’s and getting tats. Stay out of grown folks’ conversations!

        • gwvaio

          None of that.

    • scaredmoney

Yeah I completely disagree dude. Your just looking at things from a one dimensional point of view. What Lux was trying to suggest was to make the event pay-per view like WD4 and the figures he mentioned was $600k just from the live feed alone. URL has a bigger fanbase than KOTD, so this strategically makes a lot of sense. Then the battlers get 30% of the views after the live feed. But as Lux rightly said, scared money don’t make money as they backed out of this opportunity.

I feel Lux’s idea would have been the right move after having an event as successful as SM2. Its Ludicrous now that I think about it how they just rushed together this weak ass card charging MORE money. FOH, ain’t nobody wastin’ their time travelling to that shit.

Secondly, Disrespecting URL? Dude learn to get the whole story b4 u ramble on blogs. They had an agreement (fees & everything) up until July that he would be on SM3 and suddenly back out of it so how is Lux showing disrespect? If they did me like that I’d do the exact same.

  • Werd

LOL Smack/Url try to make it look like this is posted on the 30th its deh 29th making it look like deh just answered Loaded Lux recent response deh placing the order of dese videos to make it look like deh got deh last word funny….

  • North

This is a weak card with boring battles. It seems like SMACK just wants to save money on these battles by having average rappers who he’d have to pay next to nothing, with a small exception. Bars over names? Tell me SMACK, who has better bars than Loaded Lux? NO one.

  • Macmar415

If they sign a contract, exclusive or not, it’s the job on the mc to turn up and perform, It’s not on the URL. If I paid for a concert where an artist is suppose to be doing 5 songs and that artist only does 2, am I going to get mad at artist or the company sponsoring the event? At some point these mc’s need to take responsibility for their own actions. If Lux offered advice for them to generate more income per his response interview and the URL for whatever reason didn’t accept his idea it’s no reason for everyone to go nuts. How many times in the business world do you see someone offering advice and the business owner jumps at it without knowing anything about it? Never! I’m sure there was a good / valid reason behind why they aren’t using the PPV system, but to be perfectly honest, that’s none of our business. People getting on smack/URL about what he said in his blog and felt some type of way, but from a business stand point he’s right! I would be tired of paying thousands of dollars to mc’s top tier or not for subpar performances. Fans are disappointed, fan base is dropping, and bad reviews which gives the company a tarnished name in the end. I like this card to be honest except the Math vs. Jones battles. They went at it years ago and have a NY grudge but no one else outside of that cares about it so it seems to be an NY/Jersey thing oppose to a fan favorite pick. Either way I support the URL and I don’t hop on ban wagons all because a nigga hasn’t been relevant for well over 6 years but 1 performance makes him a god over night. I love lux “pause” but people are running with a round and a half from him and THE WORST choke ever in URL history. If Lux were anyone else that choked that badly, he wouldn’t be getting the credit Lux is but the fact he was gone for so long made it look like someone out the blue came and stole the show. His 3rd round was insane. His 2nd round was good. I’ve seen plenty of good rounds from numerous mc’s so 1 round in 6 years doesn’t make you
above these other battlers who been doing anywhere between 4-10 battles a year. Lux may have started you gone get this work, but mc’s like JC, Math, Verb, DNA, Ars and a few other actually do that work taking multiple battles per year! I’ll take the player that’s consistently putting up numbers year round verse the player off the bench who had ONE phenomenal game.

    • Rexchap

I’m gonna stop you right at the FIRST line of your sentence! ” feel you but it’s battle rap fam”….you ALREADY MINIMIZED IT! This is EXACTLY what i’m talking about! You think pennies you GET pennies! You can’t be having MILLIONS of viewers and STILL say “BUT it’s only”…as if the shit ain’t popping……You make good points but i don’t agree that it has to stay mom and pop!! You said that “AS IF”………They can sell 10 thousand seats EASY with right promotion, the right PEOPLE being the mouthpiece! People will fly the fuck over from England, Cali, Canada to see the right shit! I want to say what they can do, but i CANNOT give out free advice, i HAVE to be paid ! I am in Corporate America, i deal with FOLK everyday and SEE how things get popping, I’m not some youngster, i GUARANTEE i’m older than 95% of the fan base of battling. This shit makes me SMH! They are BLOWING a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY!!! I cannot stress that enough!

      • Macmar415

I think you’re taking what I’m saying / meant way out of context. It’s battle rap opposed to the commercialized music industry or film actors. When you have people that are comparing battle rap mc’s to multi-million dollar recording artists and big screen film stars it’s a totally different ball game. Hip Hop, Break Dancing, Graffiti artwork, and Free-Styling wasn’t started as a way to make the most money for your pockets, it was a way to express yourself and / or your talent and I think a lot of people are forgetting the true essence of this. Battle rap has evolved into something bigger and better than what it once was, but by no means does it mean that us TRUE B-Boys & Girls / Hip Hop fans / connoisseurs should start short changing the culture for profit regardless of how much it is. That’s what’s known as a sell out!!! Again, I’m not saying sell yourself and your craft whether it be music, dance, or art work for lowball offers, but let’s not let greed play a factor in it.

        • Rexchap

i think it just boils down to your “it ain’t there yet” to my “it ain’t there cuz you are dropping the ball”…..if they TRULY knew what they had and what they are doing, that 40k could be “POCKET CHANGE”….REAL TALK!!!

You can’t possibly believe that something like an early bird ticket to view the Con/ILL battle was the reason why they held it so long, now do you? And you’re selling less tickets too? This is quite simply…THEY COULDN’T GET THE THANG DONE with the first batch of white folks and now lets do SOMETHING with it before the battle is ENTIRELY IRRELEVANT!!! Which is already IS ! Especially with the direction the ILL went and the state that CON is in! Neither ONE are as hot as they were! You gotta see this thing for what i been sayin! They are blowing it! They need to correct this thing with the man who bought them to another level last year! OR hope like hell That Daylyt goes to another level…cuz TRUTHFULLY, Without his the antics, He’s the closest one right NOW who has similarities to LUX! They don’t Write like the others…If people actually LISTEN and are old enough and well rounded enough to understand some of his setups and punches, they’d see! Daylyt is VERY talented! It’s just SOME people refuse to see past his antics or just don’t GET some of his stuff! Which is THEIR fault! Side note! They need to get GOODZ back in the fold! Some may not like Goodz, but he IS consistent!

        • Rexchap

Macmar….That thing i said about the Con/ILL wasn’t directed at you. It may have seemed that way, but it was worded in a way that made it seem so! It was just a general rant i had! My bad……

  • Baka

We have some of the usual suspects from past ‘Summer Madness’ events like T-Rex, Calicoe, John John Da Don and K-Shine

So basically, everyone who lost their last battle gets another chance.

Thèse niggas making a lot of Bank from thèse battles they need to stop fronting. They Can Pay lux with youtube money

  • D’Jamar Unchained

man this shit to me is the same way as the ufc. they started off small and blew the fuck up! do some research and see how they made it happen. use the same format. this battle shit is the hottest shit goin, come to the table with the artists and make it happen. it seems like smack thinks that since he put this thing together, he’s supposed to eat more than the artists. I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t, but there is enough money from this for all parties to become rich. i’ll pay to see this shit. if a person paid 1 dollar to watch an event online think how many millions they would make? a battle by itself gets more than a million views. do the math!
